About Smith & Fong Co. Plyboo

Smith & Fong was founded in 1989 on the premise that bamboo could offer opportunities and solutions to some of the world’s social and environmental challenges. We began our exploration with decorative items integrating bamboo with good design and function. Four years later, we had exhausted our manufacturing capacity in Taiwan and in 1993 moved to China to convert a tea-processing plant to produce bamboo flooring. Back in San Francisco, we changed our business model and began distributing the first bamboo flooring product nationally under the Plyboo brand. In 1996 we introduced bamboo plywood product. Smith & Fong incorporated in 1997 and spent the remainder of the 1990s developing new sizes and applications for our bamboo flooring and plywood lines. 2000 was a pivotal year with the launch of bamboo strand, a bamboo process technology that allowed the material to be thrashed and pressed into dense logs. This material could then be sliced and fabricated into flooring or plywood offering a substantially denser material with an entirely new bamboo aesthetic. A year later, Smith & Fong expanded again introducing a line of plywood and flooring products made entirely of coconut palm lumber and marketed under the Durapalm™ brand. With the later additions of FSC Pure bamboo and Soy-based formaldehyde-free binders, Smith & Fong now offers a wide range of sustainable design solutions in both bamboo and palm to a global market place.
